I’m a huge advocate of using “ugly but serviceable” stuff. That said, my-day-to-day shoes are wearing to the point that I can tell what the ants had for lunch. Not sure I can get away with making my own leather moccasins.

I’m less sure about the migrant worker in Iowa’s case. I think Iowa is mostly corn and soy, which have been machine-picked-and-processed for close to 100 years now. I’m sure that some migrant labor is being used, but one automated combine can pick A LOT of corn in a day.
